METAL VIEW BLOG #4 MV APRIL 2016 "2 VOICES LOST TOO SOON"

Modesto Metal View
By Mike Vanek

2 Voices lost too soon...

I had originally planned to write this 2 months ago to pay tribute to a friend of ours and then something horribal happened... We lost one of the singers from one of the biggest bands in town... This month we pay tribute to 2 voices. Tow voices that helped shape the scene... Two totally different people from two different era's but still two brothers gone way too soon!! Rest in peace Mycal Wayte of Burial Ground and Joe Young of 17ten...

Mycal Wayte

One of the for fathers of the 209 Metal scene, Mycal Wayte fronted one of the greatest bands in the Nor Cal metal scene Burial Ground untill eventually being replaced by Chris Todd.
Mycal was crazy as a loon and one of the most suppotive people you would ever meet.
He was a lover of good metal and I had many after midnight online conversations with him over the past few years.
Burial Ground was one of the 1st Valley band's to branch out to the Bay Area and beyond being a legendary central valley metal institution for years and Mycal was a legendary voice that fronted it for years.
When he passed all his band mates paid tribute to him even though the band had been broken up on and off again for years and he had been out of the band for years longer they came together as a family and banded together for their fallen brother!!
The guys from Burial Ground (Andy, Brett, Cory and Chris) all have been really low key about it but have payed tributes online in they're own way... On April 29th there will be a memorial show for Mycal at the Other Place and it is a FREE show that will feature a Burial Ground tribute set...

Joe Young

Joe Young was a huge personality that lit up the life of everyone he touched. A vet of the local rap scene known as Hard Knox, Joe spent the last few years on and off with the Modesto based metal band 17TEN.
17Ten became one of our area's most successful bands not only on stage but off as well!! The term Pü Metal has become a household terminology in our scene and the color orange has become synonymous with the band as well.
They've incorporated it in everything they do, merch, on stage clothes and masks all honing the orange with a captive energy unmatched by other bands.
Whether In front of 3 people 100 or Joe and KC made you feel as if they were there to play just for you with they're captivating hip hop/Metal style.
I wish my brothers in 17TEN the absolute very best moving forward after this horrible tragedy... 2 Days before writing this column there was a memorial show that lasted all day and night. We jammed almost 300 people in The Other Place and had the craziest show ever dedicated to Mighty Joe Young.
People from all musical worlds came together including 6 metal bands and we paid tribute the best way we know how!! With music and friend & family!!

We will miss both of these local musical giants...
Untill next Month... Keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold!!!!

METAL VIEW BLOG #3 RIP JOE YOUNG... A FEW WORDS FOR A FRIEND...

In memory of Joe Young...
Metal View Blog #3
A BLOG FOR JOE...
Rip Joe Young of 17TEN

By Mike Vanek

Last week we lost a good friend. We lost someone that everyone who met him loved... We lost Mighty Joe Young of the band 17TEN. Joe was an awesome band member, Father, Son, Uncle, Brother and Friend!!

Joe was much more than a musician. Joe loved his family more than anything. Always posting pics of his kids and talking about em.
Whenever I saw him usually his nephews wern't too far away at the op or spin or the tattoo shop next door...

Joe made you feel like if you ever needed anything whether it being a beer with a pepper in it, or a fat dab session or just a ear to talk to he was there!! "I got you bud" are words I will never forget coming from my fallen Homie.

When Joe passed it blew me away to see the the level of support he received. All different kinds of rappers , bands and musicians reached out to play for Joe!!
The Most Envied MC held a rad dinner to raise money and his funeral was so packed that people were crowded into the lobby listening on speakers because there were just too many people that showed up to pay tribute to our boy Joe!!

We are having a all day benefit for Joe on March 19th at The Other Place 2003 Yosemite Blvd in Modesto. It costs $10 to get in and you must be 21+ to attend... We will have 15+ Bands & Artists there to perform and all proceeds go to the Joe Young Fund with a raffle, silent auction & more!!

After 20 years in the music business I can tell you that just about all my friends are tied into music someway and dealing with these people everyday they become more than just band members playing a show they become family!! To lose one suddenly is more Devastating then I ever realized it would be...

RIP JOE YOUNG 1977-2016

Last month we showcased some local bands and we are back this month to showcase a few more. By no means is this all the good bands in town and we shall cover more in the future!! Next month we pay tribute to a true great in our scene that we lost way too soon Mycal Wayte the original vocalist for Burial Ground...

5. CURSED
CURSED is one of the most veteran bands in our scene and have been around for years as one version or another including a stint as Cursed A.D. Years ago. Cursed's current lineup has been called by several local music industrie heavyweights as the strongest in the history of the band. Anchored by Bassist Roy Stanley Cursed is a major player in the Nor Cal metal scene and they are one of the few bands in the scene that have established they're name in the Nor Cal metal community. Cursed plays everywhere!! Where ever good shows happen in our scene and beyond you may find Cursed on a flyer on the wall, Check'em out!!!

2. STIGMURDER
STIGMURDER is another veteran of our scene that has pretty much stuck together through thick and thin!! With the same basic nucleus still intact after years and years of playing throughout the Nor Cal scene. Welcoming their new bass player "Topher" this past year STIGMURDER has steamed ahead. STIGMURDER has always had one of the most entertaining and high energy bands in our scene dating all the way back to their early days at places like The Palm Gardens in Modesto!! These guys bring the show everytime and make the crowd part of the party!! If you haven't been part of the STIGMURDER experience go see them in a bar near you!!

3. FOREVER OBSCURED
FO is one of the most heaviest bands in our scene by far!! Releasing their debut album last year and a music video to accompany it Forever Obscured has been on a roll launching themselves on media like ITunes and SPOTIFY putting themselves in a position to forward the band in a positive position in the future be on the lookout for this local heavy powerhouse!!

4. PATH OF TOTALITY
Like having a good time?? GO SEE THIS BAND!!! Path of Totality representatives of the Lodi / Manteca area is a high energy old school take no prisoners speed metal masterpiece!! If I had to pick the perfect down to earth band that is rad to see play and chill with this is that band!! Greg, Alexa & Yoni are 3 of the coolest people and musicians and I truly love these guys and you will too!!

METAL VIEW BLOG #1: MV FEBRUARY 2016 "LOCAL BAND SHOWCASE PART 1"

Modesto Metal View
LOCAL BAND SHOWCASE #1
By Mike Vanek

With a strange landscape for our local metal scene on the Yosemite Strip... I think it is important to showcase the bands I think are a shining beacon of hope for our scene. For The Next few months I will showcase a few bands in our scene a few at a time... More coming Next Month...

1. Nothing But Losers
NBL is a band that has evolved many times over the years and has a facinating story. This band is a close family unit that appreciates other bands in the scene and new bands that they meet here or while on the road playing in other cities. This current lineup is the strongest it has ever been adding former Brutal Innocence drummer Dave "LUNCHBOX" Ussery on Percussion/Drums most recently they have raised the bar when it comes to image, showmanship and all out brutality with a savage live show and hopefully a album in the near future. When I think of Modesto Metal, I think of Nothing But Losers a bunch of guys who turn into fans at the show when the set is over and that is the raddest part of this band...

2. Perfect Nightmare
Perfect F'ing Nightmare as I often hear in the parking lot at local shows is by far one of the best up and coming bands in our  scene!! After a lineup change last year they have come out swinging with one of the best 30 minute metal sets you will see in our scene!! This is a high energy metal band that does whatever it takes to enegize the crown no matter how big or small... The stage presence this band creates is one of the most captivating things I have ever seen big things are in the future of this force of nature of Modesto Metal. After winning the Youth MAMA a few years ago and attacking the local scene they lost 2 members at what seemed to be the hight of their popularity but original members Stephani and Mari didn't give up, they totally rebuilt the band and came back better than ever!! These guys are definatly a band to go out and see if you havenet already!!

3. Sworn To The Black
Sworn is one of the heaviest bands metal bands Modesto has to provide!! With mindblowing musicianship and riffs to match a seasoned vet in Kirk Salazar who has played in a few of the best bands in town at one point like And All Was Lost and Epidemia with Sworn drummer Pelon. Pelon was also in SEIP with Sworn guitarist Jared Davis who were also a legendary band in our scene. This past year they were joined by former Reclaim and Conquer guitarist Tomas Peinthor and longtime 209 area bassist who has played in bands such Bind and Better Left Unsaid Rich Saturnino and these guys have become a brutal metal band that borders the line of death metal but are by far one of the heaviest and sickest bands in town and are one of the most sought after bands in the 209 area!!

4. 17Ten
The final band I have for you this month is the band that brings the party to every show they play. 17Ten is throwback to old school hip hop influenced metal with with sick and rythmic vocals that keep the energy in the room at a full tilt. Anchored by 209 metal legend Captain Chuck Gaither tied together by Vocalists Joe Young, KC Agar and Sektor209's Jr Guzman that bring excitement and energy to the crowd and they add something different to every show!! These guys are all cool guys and their level of energy was captured on cd this last year when they released they freshman release entitled S**t eating grin. This cd is the perfect cd to listen to while at work or doing something ya really don't like because it is a constant source of high energy knowlage and it totally rocks!! I couldn't ask for something better for a long trip somewhere and these guys are just as good live as the cd and that is rare go see 17ten!!

Thats all for me this month!!
